Best of 2010 – Part 1: Music

25 12 2010

Last year I failed to write a “Best of 2009” posting. (after starting in 2008) 2009 was not a good year concerning new music releases. 2010 – much better! So I again follow the TOP 5 list principle inspired by Nick Hornby´s book “High Fidelity” and allow myself to integrate one or the other link & hint. Of course this list is completely personal.
So here we go:

TOP 5: TRACK OF THE YEAR
Not easy to choose. A lot of tracks of the Top Album list (see below) could be in this list, too.
Stand Still by The Album Leaf
Five Little Rooms by Menomena
5 Steps/7 Swords by Get Well Soon
Blood Buzz Ohio by The National
In This Shirt by The Irrepressibles

This song is not new (written for a soundtrack – I think – in 2008), but it was released in this year´s debut album “Mirror Mirror” by the great band project The Irrepressibles. And well, it´s my song of the year. Something that will stay for a longer period of time.

TOP 5: ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Again, a tough decision. I felt absolutey sure about the first three ones in this list. Fantastic albums. But they are so many other good releases (just to mention examples… Efterklang, The Miserable Rich, I am Kloot, some Jazz albums etc. etc.), but I picked two surprises at the end of that list.
Mines by Menomena
Total Life Forever by Foals
A Chorus of Storytellers by The Album Leaf
The Morning After by James
I´m New Here by Gil Scott Heron

Picked out a The Album Leaf Live Video from their Vienna Gig (thanks to LocalHero who´s providing some really good live videos on Youtube) /also see concert list

TOP 5: RUNNING SHOES PLAYLIST
Blood Buzz Ohio by The National
Me and the Devil by Gil Scott Heron
Alter Ego by Markus Kienzl (released in 2009 on Markus Kienzl´s album Density)
SDP by The Kissaway Trail (inspired by their gig at Arena supporting The National)
Winter Hill by Doves (released on my album of the year 2009 “Kingdom of Rust” by Doves)

TOP 5: FADEOUT SONGS (before falling asleep)
Blank Pages by The Album Leaf
Emerald and Stone by Brian Eno
The Same Shoes by I am Kloot
The Mouth of the Wolf by The Miserable Rich
Epilog (Streichquartett in G-Moll) by Julian Maas & Christoph M. Kaiser (Soundtrack “This is Love” in 2009)

TOP 5: CONCERTS
Unfortunately I missed Memomena, Get Well Soon and Foals…

The Album Leaf – Szene Wien 9.3.2010
video above
Speak JazzFestival Saalfelden 26.-28.9.2010

thanks for providing this and many other Saalfelden videos on Youtube to wotan667.

Alex Machacek Trio with Herbert Pirker and Raphael Preusch – Porgy & Bess 7.9.

The Miserable Rich – Chelsea Wien 2.5.2010
Jonsi – Arena Wien 24.7.2010 Great performance, fantastic visual concept!!
This clip is promotional, but catches the atmosphere pretty well…

So, that´s it for a great music year 2010.
2011 looks good, too. Watch out for the new releases by The Decemberists, Cake, Amos Lee (January), Bright Eyes, The Low Anthem, Radiohead… and some promising live appearances e.g. by (sensationally!!!) Godspeed You! Black Emporer (25.1. Arena), I Like Trains (26.1. Chelsea), Efterklang (March), …trail of dead (April) and well, for all who share some memories on that… Judas Priest & Whitesnake will say hello & goodbye in June. Possibly the last chance to see Priest on tour. In case you care. I do😉

Great lists! My only suggestion would be adding Caribou’s Swim to the top album list. They also played a very intense (but also very short) gig in Vienna a couple of weeks ago…

Thanks a lot!
I´m happy about further recommendations on releases I possibly missed.
I didn´t know the Caribou album, so I´m gonna listen to it asap😉
Good time to do so on days like these.
